Self-knowledge - about the alcohol content in wine

Selbsterkenntnis- vom Alkoholgehalt im Wein

Well, it actually started with me (female, 59) I was worried about my health. Maybe a little too much weight here and there, a roll or a little bulge. Oh well, you tell yourself. That's age.

Then come the warnings: “Obesity increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and especially the risk of strokes.

Okay, I thought. Sport and exercise aren't bad within my means, not excessive—but OK.

Let's move on to my diet. I'm a late sleeper, and breakfast isn't really my thing. I cook everything fresh—no fast food, no ready-made pizza, or anything like that. And I take my time cooking.

Then comes the topic of drinking.

A glass of sparkling wine or Prosecco is fine, a glass of white wine when cooking, and a glass of red wine with dinner. Just one glass. Maybe a small nightcap in the evening. We've never had hard drugs like schnapps, whiskey, gin, or anything similar.

Did you know that one percent alcohol in wine is about 7 grams of pure alcohol? The alcohol content of ethanol in wine is between 9-13% (72-104 g/l). This means that  The 2 or 3 deciliters I drank during the day is around 15-25 grams of pure alcohol that I was just consuming - I didn't realize that.

15-25 g pure alcohol

And  Another thing that came to mind: I was training as a chemical laboratory technician at a large international chemical company. In one of these laboratories, there was a laboratory technician who He was so addicted that he used a pipette to draw pure alcohol from a chemical bottle (pure ethanol) so no one would notice . He needed one bottle every five days. So, about 200 grams per day, and I'm already getting 20 grams per day?

Okay, I have to change that.

I started looking for alternatives. Soda, cola, sweet cider, reduced-calorie drinks, zero-calorie drinks—all too sweet and not the pleasure of a nice glass of white or red wine. And then, at social gatherings or at aperitifs, the alternative: water (still/sparkling) and orange juice (even from a carton)—are you serious?

Then the first non-alcoholic wines and sparkling wines—well, sweet, sweeter, and more like a children's drink. Not my thing. Still, onward.

Then the first breakthrough - a sparkling wine that is not sweet, but has a nice acidity and is drinkable even in terms of the amount of carbonation.

Hope: So they do exist – the sparkling wines and wines – you just have to look for them and find them.

Since then, I have been drinking my way through the world of non-alcoholic sparkling wines, wines, and now also teas. It is fascinating how some winemakers approach this topic  and what commitment the cultural drink wine is supplemented with non-alcoholic alternatives.

I explicitly say supplemented here because I don’t see the non-alcoholic alternatives as a replacement, but rather as a supplement.

And since then, we have always seen surprised faces at our invitations about the available alternatives containing “grape juice”.

So, take a look at our zeropercento page and just try As always, much is a matter of taste. You just won't find sweet grape juices here.

And it's such a great feeling to enjoy a nice glass with a clear head - then it can be a little more sometimes - Cheers and VIVA.
