Alcohol-free wine/sparkling wine is a classic wine from which the alcohol has been gently removed after fermentation – usually through vacuum distillation or reverse osmosis. Taste and aroma are largely preserved in the process.
Legally, non-alcoholic wine may contain up to 0.5% alcohol by volume. This is comparable to ripe fruit or fruit juice and is considered non-alcoholic.
The first step involves producing a regular wine containing alcohol – the same effort and processing methods are used. Then the alcohol is removed, usually through vacuum distillation , reverse osmosis , or spinning cone column – processes that preserve aromas and quality.
It contains many of the healthy ingredients of wine (e.g., polyphenols) – without the negative effects of alcohol . Ideal for mindful enjoyment, drivers, pregnant women, or athletes.
It comes very close to the original (ever closer), but often has a fruitier, milder, and less complex flavor. However, modern methods are increasingly achieving an authentic taste.
Unopened, it has a shelf life of approximately 12–24 months . Once opened, it should be treated like regular wine and consumed within 3–5 days to ensure optimal flavor.
Opinions differ on this, and as always, it comes down to personal taste. Some drink wine or sparkling wine at 6–10 °C . This allows the freshness to shine through. Others enjoy it at 11–12 °C to savor the aromas. Sparkling wine is certainly more likely to be drunk cooler.
